The comment I hear a lot in my Dusty Bookshelf Goodreads Group is that people wish that they could stop buying books and read the ones they already own. I have this problem, too. Hello 100 ebooks on my Kindle.
So I tried to think of some motivation to stop myself from buying books and I came up with this challenge. The goal of this mini-challenge is to not buy any books for the month of August and give the money you would have spent on books to a charity of your choice like a local school or food bank. That gives you the perfect excuse to read those books sitting on your shelf.
If you are thinking that there is no way in heaven you could stop buying books for a whole month, I have 3 charity related challenges for you. I’m hosting this mini-challenge as part of my Dusty Bookshelf Reading Challenge but anyone can join.
- Challenge 1: Don’t buy any books for the month of August and donate the money you save to a local school or charity.
- Challenge 2: Go through your bookshelves and see if there are at least 10 books you can donate to your local library, school, or other charity that is in need of books.
- Challenge 3: Spend four hours this month teaching a kid to read or volunteering at a local school or charity.
I want to hear your pledges for this challenge in the comments or through a blog post (you can link up in the linky). If anyone has any experiences they would like to share through the month from doing this challenge, please email me at booksatruestory@gmail dot com and I would love to have you guest post on my blog.
I hope that as a group we can come together and make a difference. I picked the month of August for this challenge because I thought it would be a great opportunity to help out schools right before school starts next month. To be clear, I am not collecting money or book donations. This is a personal challenge for you. You decide what to give and to whom.

Come back at the end of the month and I will have a form for you to fill out anonymously so we can see how much we were able to collectively help others.
Which Challenge do you accept?
I am going to do Challenge 1 – no buying books for the whole month. I usually spend about $20 a month on books for myself. I am going to use that $20 and donate it to my son’s school for books.
Leave a comment about your pledge or link up your blog post below. Thank you so much!
