Downton Abbey

February 24, 2012 By Jessica Filed Under: My Reading Diary 8 Comments

I don’t watch TV very much, but once in a while a show will come along that just grabs me.  I stay up late to find out what happens next and buy the whole season so I can watch it over and over.  Downton Abbey is my new favorite show and here are some reasons why:

  • Culture: I love how from the first episode you get to learn what it was like to live in the early 1900s.  It’s a time period I didn’t know much about.  There are servants and telephones and cars and fancy dinners.  It’s chock full of wonderful details.
  • Matthew Crawley: My, my, romantic lead, you are dashing.

Matthew Crawley played by Dan Stevens

  • Drama: There is drama and scandal in every episode.  What fun!
  • Maggie Smith: I love her character, the Dowager Countess.  The honest and passive-aggressive things she says are so hilarious!
  • Charm: They all have British accents.  How can you not love that?!
  • Characters:  All of the characters have so much depth to them.  You get to know a lot of them in detail from the servants, the maids, the butler, to the Lords, Dukes and Countesses.  The characters are so well rounded, flawed and interesting that it feels like they are real people that you know.
  • Writing: The wit and sarcasm in one episode alone is quite shocking.
  • High-quality: The actors are so amazing and talented.  The costumes are beautiful and historically accurate.  Its filmed at a real location –  Highclear Castle.  And since it’s public television, they sold season 2 on Blu-ray before the season finale had even aired. How awesome is that!!!

If you want an entertaining show that takes you on an emotional ride, you have to watch this show!

Have you seen it yet?  What do you love about Downton Abbey?

Thank you for posting about this! I see Tweets all the times about Downtown Abbey and was not sure if I should start watching it or not. I think I’ll watch an episode or two on Netflix this weekend and see if it’s my “thing” :-)

I LOVE this show! My mom and I sit in almost silence while it is on.  You hit the nail on the head with all these points too. My mom asked me the other day who my favorite couple was and I was like “I love them all!!” same with all the characters! Such a great show…

In an unrelated note, I did this Book Tag thing where you get tagged by someone and answer their questions. I chose you to tag, so if you want to, check it out. No hard feelings if you don’t though :)

I know! I love all the couples, too.  Anna and Bates…*sigh*.

I watched the entire series in a week and half ! It was like a more charming version of The Tudors. I don’t watch a lot of dramas, but this one is my favorite.

It’s one of those addictive series that you can’t stop watching!  I love those kinds of shows and they are so rare :)

Silly me, I only started watching Season One last month and I couldn’t get enough of it! I’m now waiting for my copy of Season Two so that I can continue watching (and also to continue my life, yeah, it’s that dramatic! LOL!).

I love your points about the series and yes, I love Matthew Crawley (I was so shocked about his decision after Season Three) and Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess. Her lines are hilarious and totally laugh-out-loud. They certainly kept some of the best lines for her. :)

I only hope that the series goes on for many more seasons and stays as fantastic as it is.
