Dusty Bookshelf June Mini Challenge and Giveaway!

June 1, 2012 By Jessica Filed Under: Reading Challenge 46 Comments

Hi everyone! How is your challenge going?  I’ve read 2 books out of my 20 which means I’m 6 books behind…but 2 is better than nothing!

If you’re like me and need some extra motivation to read your dusty books, I’ve got a fun mini-challenge for you!

Page to Screen Month!

This mini challenge is simple – pick a book from your dusty bookshelf challenge that has been made into a movie or TV show.  Then read the book and watch the movie/show before the end of the month.  If you complete the challenge this month, you can get 10 bonus entries in the giveaway!

Also, there are a few discussion boards in the Dusty Bookshelf group on Goodreads just for this mini-challenge if you want some people to chat with and motivate you. :)

Giveaway

This giveaway is open to everyone, but if you join my Goodreads group for the Dusty Bookshelf Challenge or finish the mini challenge, you will get extra entries.  Here’s what you can win:

Book Cover for The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick

Hugo Cabret on Blu-ray

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick and Hugo on Blu-ray (or DVD if you prefer) :)

This giveaway is open INTERNATIONALLY! But, please understand that because of region restrictions on movies I might not be able to buy you the movie depending on where you live.  If that’s the case, I will get you a book of your choice for $20 or less from the Book Depository instead of the movie.  But two books is still awesome, right? (Read this if you want to learn more about region restrictions on movies.)

Good luck!

The Godfather. I think that film is one of those rare cases in which the movie is way better than the book.

The Hunger games, I thought the movie was even better than the book.
Lord of the Rings, I love the movies, but the books are horrible (I’m sorry if I offend people with this, but it’s just my opinion.)

Recently, I really enjoyed The Hunger Games. I think they did a great job. I just like seeing how books change to movies…I don’t really worry about the differences. :)

I thought the Virgin Suicides movie was much kinder in its treatment of the Lux-Trip romance than the book.

One of my wowinest favorite books is Brave Story by Miyuku Miyabe. It has been made into an animated movie which I have yet to see, but from the clips and music videos I’ve seen of it on YouTube, it looks like its a faithful adaptation that conveys the themes and characters well.

My favorite book to screen adaption, appropriately, is Hugo. I love Martin Scorsese and dragged my dad to the limited-release theater in my neighborhood to go see this, and I was immediately affected by this film in a way I have never been before.  Movies are my great love, next to books, and when I saw this, I was a part of a cast of characters who were entranced by the magic of cinema as I was, and I felt like I wasn’t alone. I don’t own a copy of the movie but I would really love to and I also want to read the book.

Would 300 by Frank Miller count? ^_^

I think I would be in the minority but I also liked the movie adaptation of Possession by AS Byatt (starring Aaron Eckhart)

My favorite  book to screen adaptations are “The Princess Bride” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Another favorite is actually book to small-screen; I am loving the “Game of Thrones” series on HBO and I’ve completed the first three books in the series.

Favorite  book to movie adaptation? This is easy. The Lord of the Rings. That’s right, all three books/films. This movie trilogy proved to me that an accurate, devoted, well-made adaptation is possible.

This book has been on my to-read shelf since I heard about the movie… I haven’t seen it yet because I really want to read it first (despite my no-comparing rule about adaptations, however tempting it might be to complain sometimes). I’m excited! Thanks for doing this!
