Reading Queue June

June 1, 2013 By Jessica Filed Under: Reading Queue 9 Comments

Format: select

Reading Queue is a monthly meme where you share what books you plan to read for the month.  You can hop to other blogs and see what others are reading and maybe find someone reading the same thing as you! Or you can ask for people to vote on what you should read next if you can’t decide.  Reading Queue is hosted by Book Tasty and Books:  A true story.

If you have your own monthly recap post that talks about what you are going to read next, feel free to link up below!  All post types and formats are welcome as long as you are talking about your reading plans for the month.  And if you could link back to us so others can join that would be great!

My Reading Queue

Dusty Book:

Atlas Shrugged

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

I made a list a few months ago that listed 5 books over 1000 pages that I haven’t read yet.  I love really long books and honestly I read more of them when I wasn’t blogging.  Since I have no review books left to read and a list of 6 books waiting to be reviewed I thought I’d read this monster of a book.  It’s been sitting on my shelf for 6 years now.

Challenge Books:

For the Classic Double Challenge

Transparent

Transparent by Natalie Whipple

I was so so sad that I couldn’t make it to this book launch party for the lovely Natalie Whipple who is a local author. And this is her debut!  I’m really looking forward to reading it.  I don’t know for sure if this is a retelling of The Invisible Man, but I thought that the plots sounded similar enough that I’d read them both together and see how similar they are.

The Invisible Man

The Invisible Man by H. G. Wells

I’m a big fan of H. G. Wells and I’m excited to read this one!  I’m also interested to see if it has any similarities to Transparent by Natalie Whipple.

How I did Last Month:

So I went on vacation this last week. I read like a boss.  Seriously. I read seven books this month. SEVEN. That never happens.  While my husband was driving I kept my nose in my book to reduce the backseat driving/nag-givating (I just looked up from my book and stared pointedly at the speedometer occasionally.  It was a huge improvement).

I deserve a self-five for my both of my major accomplishments. :)

self five

Harken (Harken, #1)

Harken by Kaleb Nation

DONE!

I liked the suspenseful plot and the supernatural twist but oh my gosh did I dread going into a new room because it would just info dump every detail of the new room that I didn’t need to know.

Divide and Conquer (Infinity Ring #2)

Infinity Ring: Divide and Conquer by Carrie Ryan

DONE!

I actually learned a little about Viking history. Wasn’t expecting that but I had so much fun looking things up on Wiki while I read.  I haven’t finished playing the companion game yet because it’s sooo tedious. At least the first mini-game is. Gah! Why can’t I beat it? It’s so not fair.

Elizabeth Street: A Novel Based On True Events

Elizabeth Street by Laurie Fabiano

DONE!

This book shattered me.  It tells a family’s story across multiple generations that was absolutely amazing to read.  But majorly sad things happen to this family.  And there are little kids involved.  I couldn’t put it down until everyone was safe and happy again.  There was lots of tears while reading this book.

Asunder (Newsoul, #2)

Asunder by Jodi Meadows

DONE!

I really liked this book.  My theories were totally wrong. Round of applause for the author for that.  It kept me surprised and on my toes.  The plot went in a really cool new direction and I can’t wait to read the next book.  I loved finding out more details about this world.  Oh and Sam is still just about as exciting as a rock.

BONUS

(Books I picked up on a whim because I ran out of books to read. O.o)

The Great GatsbyThe Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

I picked this one up last minute so I could go see the movie.  I’m glad I read the book before the movie. The book was better no matter how delicious Leonardo DiCaprio is.

Sky on Fire (Monument 14, #2)

Monument 14: Sky on Fire by Emmy Laybourne

This came in the mail from a giveaway I won and I devoured it in one day. It was yummy.  Not as funny as the first one, but oh so good.  Lots of sarcasm though that had a pleasing crunch.

The Actor and the Housewife

The Actor and the Housewife by Shannon Hale

I had read two intense books in a row and I was just in the mood for a chick flick.  It was fun.  Surprisingly non-cliche.  But it didn’t end the way I thought it would.  It was a good ending but at the same time I felt like “Well what was the point of all that?” It didn’t really go anywhere.

I’m glad to see you liked Asunder. I haven’t read it yet but I definitely liked the first one. I think I’m going to skip Sky on Fire. I read Monument 14 and wasn’t much a fan. Good luck with Atlas Shrugged! And with being caught up on review books. I’ll be reading some in June that came out in May. :-/

Asunder is so good :) If you liked the first one I think you’ll love the second one.

I have major anxiety when I read review books late. But better late than never right? :) So glad that you joined our meme! I loved reading your reading queue. I hope more people join in on the fun.

Yay! We have a second Reading Queue! I just bought my husband The Great Gatsby so he could (finally) read it before saw the movie. He started it last week, but I’m hoping he gets to finish it this weekend. I can’t wait to see this movie! As a big Shannon Hale fan, I’ve been interested in The Actor and the Housewife…so it was just okay?

I found the relationship between the actor and housewife to be just awkward sometimes. Not all the time – they actual played off each other well and it was very entertaining to read. I really enjoyed the emotional ride that it took you on through the story and it’s definitely not cliche but I was disappointed with the ending. :( I think you should give it a try if you love Shannon Hale – it’s got her signature style. Maybe you’ll like the ending more than I did.

Tell me what you think of the movie! Did you read the book already?

I’m so glad I found this meme! I see I’m not the only one who plans ahead what I’m going to read for the month. I read book one of The Infinity Ring and thought it was okay, not as good as The 39 Clues. I also have Elizabeth Street on my Kindle but have yet to read it.

Woohoo! Glad to have you for our meme :) Making a list of what I’m going to read keeps me sane :)

I haven’t read the 39 Clues yet. But if they are better than Infinity Ring, I’d love to give them a try. I’m liking this idea of a game to go with a book :) Elizabeth Street is so good. You should cram it somewhere on your list! lol
