Reading Queue October

October 1, 2013 By Jessica Filed Under: Reading Queue 17 Comments

Format: select

Reading Queue is a monthly meme where you share what books you plan to read for the month.  You can hop to other blogs and see what others are reading and maybe find someone reading the same thing as you! Or you can ask for people to vote on what you should read next if you can’t decide.  Reading Queue is hosted by Book Tasty and Books:  A true story.

To Read

Ender's Game by Orson Scott CardFor Book Club:

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

We are reading this so we can all go see the movie together and compare it to the book.  We are also reading The Book Thief but I’ve read that one recently and I haven’t read Ender’s Game since high school.  Orson Scott Card was one of my favorite authors as a teen.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini TaylorPoll Winner:

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Thanks everyone for voting on my poll last month! The winner by one vote was Daughter of Smoke and Bone and what do you know it just barely came in at the library for me on my kindle! It was like fate! I’m really excited to read it.  I’ve wanted to read it ever since I saw the epic and intriguing first page on tumblr:

daughter of smoke and bone intro

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom RiggsFor the R.I.P. Challenge:

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

I usually skip this challenge every year because I’m a wimp and I don’t like scary books or movies.  But I’ve had Miss Peregrine sitting on my shelf for almost 2 years now and this one looks more mildly creepy that outright scary.  BUT WE SHALL SEE. I hope I can still sleep at night after I read it. :)

The Orphanage by Gary TaaffeFor Review:

The Orphanage by Gary Taaffe

I love these short stories set in Australia about a boy from the bush who meets a girl from the city.

How I Did Last Month

A Thousand Splendid Suns

Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

DONE.

What a powerful book about the women of Afganistan.  We had an awesome discussion in book club for this one.  I liked this one so much better than the Kite Runner.

The Hourglass Door

The Hourglass Door Trilogy

ALMOST DONE.

I’m over halfway through book 2 of this series right now.  I’m gonna be honest – these are not my most favorite books.  I find them very slow and kind of predictable.  And I fall asleep a lot while I’ve been reading them.  I do like the time travel part of the book and that is what is keeping me going with these.

Prisoner Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

DONE.

Reading this with Pottermore was so fun.  However, I feel like the updated Pottermore focuses more on it being a game than something to do while you read a long with it.  I really hate the four menu bars they’ve got going on there and I found it really hard to navigate and know where exactly in the book the moments happened.  Anyway – I loved learning the backstory for Lupin from Pottermore.  This book was just as good as the first time I read it.

I think the creepiest part of Miss Peregrine’s are the weird pictures. The story was not at all what I had expected which was unfortunate for me because I wanted to read something that would creep me out and keep me up at night.

Well that’s good news for me! I don’t like stories that keep me up at night scared :) But it always sucks when your expectations are way different from what really happens in the book.

I loved Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Probably one of my top ten favorite books ever. The story really surprised me (in a good way) and it definitely isn’t scary…maybe a little on the eerie side though. I am wanting to buy the paperback now because they added more pictures to it and things. I hope you enjoy it :)
I’ve owned A Thousand Splendid Suns FOREVER and I still have yet to read it! I need to get on that. I enjoyed his newest book.

Ok I’m loving all this reassurance that it’s not going to be scary :) And I love books that are surprising. I’m even more excited to read it now.

And you should definitely read A Thousand Splendid Suns! It was truly amazing. I learned so much about the culture and history of Afganistan.

I am with Emma in that I was a bit disappointed with Miss Peregine’s Home for Peculiar Children. I really loved the photos in the book though.

Meh, I’m not loving Pottermore either. I think I totally would’ve been into the games when I was younger, now not so much. I’m still loving Jo’s bits of information! … but wishing she would just publish them in an encyclopedia.

Anyways, I really can’t wait to hear what you think of Daughter of Smoke and Bone! Laini Taylor has got to be one of the most creative authors I’ve ever read.

At least it’s easier to find the extra writing with the new design (although I still hate the way it looks now) – it used to be that you had to beat all the games to get to it first. How I hate that tedious gnome game.

I’m so excited to read Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I love creative authors!!

I love Harry Potter, I really need to re-read these books at some point. I’ve read Daughter of Smoke and Bone and really enjoyed it. I haven’t read The Enders Game, but I’ve seen clips of the movie and it definitely makes me want to pick up the book.

Good luck on your reading queue this month.

I need to get my post up! I’m curious to see what you think of The Hourglass Door since that’s been on my TBR list for awhile. I’m totally scared for you Peculiar Children! Just looking at that cover freaks me out. I’m a wimp too!

No rush on writing your post. The linky is open all month :) Honestly, I find the plot really slow for The Hourglass door trilogy. But the time travel is pretty interesting. Very clean too.

Ah I love that you are scared for me lol! We wimps need to stick together. And then we’ll watch Disney’s Hocus Pocus for halloween k? :D

I just reread Prisoner of Azkaban last month as well! I didn’t do it with Pottermore, though, and actually haven’t been on there in a long time. I’m sorry the changes aren’t better. I need to get on and read the Lupin backstory. He’s one of my favorite characters from the series. Also, I really need to read Ender’s Game, especially with the movie coming out! I’ve had the book for a while now but I just haven’t picked it up.

You have the same reading taste as I do. I read and loved Harry Potter and I like Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I have Ender’s Game on my TBR list. I hope I get to it before the movie comes out in DVD. LOL!
