This is for the Classic Double Challenge hosted by One Librarian’s Book Reviews. I like to read classic novels and a modern retelling and then compare and contrast them. I know. How very Hermione of me but whatever. I think it’s fun :)
Differences
- The Scarlet Pimpernel
- Saves people from getting their head chopped off
- Acts flakey for disguise
- Interested in fashion
- Life After Theft
- Returns stolen stuff for a dead girl
- Acts sarcastic but not for a disguise
- Not interested in fashion
Similarities
- Both main characters are men
- Use a red flower as their code name
- Has to try not to get caught doing the right thing
- Rift between the main character and the love interest because of the past

Very cool! I’ve been meaning to try Pike’s book, but haven’t found the time. Sounds like it’s not quite as similar to the original as Peterfreund’s.

Yeah it wasn’t that good as a retelling and honestly I didn’t enjoy it that much just on it’s own either.

Wow, I love this challenge and you picked a very interesting classic to compare. Did you prefer the classic or the modern retelling?
Jessica says
Oh I should write that at the end of my posts! I love doing these but I’ve always thought they were boring to read. Thanks for the idea :) Anyway – for this one I thought the classic was better. The retelling was not very good and it just wasn’t an interesting story either.
