Reading Queue May

April 30, 2014 By Jessica Filed Under: Reading Queue 9 Comments

Format: select

Reading Queue is a monthly meme where you share what books you plan to read for the month.  You can hop to other blogs and see what others are reading and maybe find someone reading the same thing as you! Or you can ask for people to vote on what you should read next if you can’t decide.  Reading Queue is hosted by Book Tasty and Books:  A true story.

To Read

EvertrueNew Book – Evertrue by Brodi Ashton

This seems to be the year for the final book in epic series.  I loved the first two books in this Persephone and Hades retelling and I can’t wait to see how it ends!

The MessengerTBR Pile – Messenger by Lois Lowry

Look it’s on my list again!  I’m going to read this one very next so I won’t miss it again this month.

Proof of HeavenBook Club – Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife
by Eben Alexander

I might actually do this one on audio.  I don’t normally read books like this, but it looks interesting.  I like how book club expands my reading horizons.

A Little PrincessClassic – A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

I’ve been going through my kindle and Goodreads TBR to find classics that I want to read but haven’t gotten to yet.  I loved the movie version of this book and I can’t wait to read the novel.

Ready Player OneAudiobook – Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

I was going to listen to this one last month, but as soon as I went to download it, it was due at the library! I got it again and I’m going to start it tonight when I do the dishes.

How I Did Last Month

Dreams of Gods and MonstersDONE – Dreams of Gods & Monsters by Laini Taylor

I read this 613 page novel in two days.  I literally did not put it down.  I loved loved the whole thing but I felt like it should have ended about 100 pages sooner than it did.  I just wasn’t a fan of the final subplot.

FlippedDONE – Flipped by by Wendelin Van Draanen

I read this book in one sitting on a bet from a friend that I couldn’t. :) She wanted to watch the movie adaption but I hadn’t read it yet so I hurried and read it before we got together that evening.  It was a cute romance with great themes of how we judge and view others based on appearances instead of what’s on the inside.

The MessengerDIDN’T START – Messenger by Lois Lowry

I will read this I will read this.

Journey to the Center of the EarthDONE – Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne

This is a classic that did not stand the test of time very well.   I felt like I was pretending that I didn’t remember anything after 8th grade science so I could enjoy the novel.  But as far as adventure stories go, it was good I guess.  But seriously – I could not get over things that could just never ever happen like getting shot out of a volcano (yes lava and all) and SURVIVING.  Even Darth Vader barely survived something like that with some serious machinery to repair all his broken parts.

ElusionSTARTED – Elusion by Claudia Gabel and Cheryl Klam

I can’t say much about it since I started it yesterday, but I think it should be a fun read.

QuietDONE – Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain

I loved this book.  I finished the audiobook and now I’m going back through the ebook and highlighting like crazy.  I feel like I know myself a little better.  I realize now when I’m feeling overwhelmed and I make it a point to take time to myself to read or spend time on my own.  It’s made me a lot happier.  I also have been standing up for myself more, but in my own way by asking lots of questions and not being afraid to speak my mind just because I’m not a loud person.  It also made me realize the social pressures I had been putting on myself and my kids.  I always felt guilty for not having “enough” play dates and social time.  And by “enough” I mean daily play dates.  I realize now that the pace of a few times a week makes both my and my kids happy.  I don’t feel pressure to have them constantly doing something with other kids anymore.

I’m so glad to hear how much you enjoyed Quiet. I just added it to my Want to read list on Goodreads. I’m an introvert as well, and am very interested in this book.

Good luck on your reading queue this month!

You should read it! I learned so much about our culture to that I hadn’t noticed. She points out all the specific ways the being loud and extroverted is so valued in our society – probably over valued.

I feel ashamed of myself that I haven’t read the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series. Looks like you had a good month and a fun month planned. Enjoy !

Quiet is not my typical book but it seems like something I really should read. I love that you got so much out of it. I used to feel bad for not setting up playdates all that time for my kids but they just totally stress me out, even if it is ridiculous it’s how it is for me. I think getting older has helped me not care so much for what other people think I should be doing but I think this book might help me as well.
Also on your list, I really need to read Dreams of Gods and Monsters now that it’s out! Although, I’ll probably do it on audio since that’s how I “read” all the others. I love the narrator! I can’t wait to see what you think of Evertrue. I started the audio a couple months ago and just stopped going back to it. I want to pick it up again but I didn’t love the beginning like I did the others. Hopefully you’ll love it!
    Enjoy your reading this month!

Yes definitely read it! If you are even a little introverted it will teach you so much about how being outgoing isn’t the most important thing and it’s better to be yourself.

I hope I like Evertrue. I loved the first two and it’s hard to find really good last books. Dreams of Gods and Monsters was excellent!

You have an awesome Reading Queue this month. You HAVE to listen to Ready Player One very soon, I got mine off my brother and it was so amazing and left me with a lot of late nights trying to sleep.

I am currently listening to Dreams Of Gods and Monsters and I am finding it hard to try and remember who all the characters are. Elusion sounds great and I am pretty sure I have this on my iPad.
Brodi Ashton is an author I keep meaning to pick up and read, although I am about 50% sure I have the first book on my iPad somewhere……I definitely need to sort it out and update my goodreads at some point.

    My Reading Queue is here

Hey! One of my co-workers recommended Ready Player One to me too! He said it was one of the best books he’s read, so I’ll definitely have to check out the audiobook! :) Good luck with your queue as usual!
