Reading Queue July

June 30, 2014 By Jessica Filed Under: Reading Queue 5 Comments

Format: select

Reading Queue is a monthly meme where you share what books you plan to read for the month.  You can hop to other blogs and see what others are reading and maybe find someone reading the same thing as you! Or you can ask for people to vote on what you should read next if you can’t decide.  Reading Queue is hosted by Book Tasty and Books:  A true story.

To Read

I’m still randomizing my Goodreads TBR and I’m having a lot of fun with it! Here’s what randomly came up for the month of July.

Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin by Liesl Shurtliff Own signed hardcover for book club
Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board by Bethany Hamilton Library eAudiobook
Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers
Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers Own signed hardcover

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith Own on kindle
Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse Own on my kindle

How I Did Last Month

The Story of My LifeCURRENTLY READING The Story of My Life by Helen Keller

This memoir is beautifully written.  It’s bittersweet to read about her struggles of being deaf and blind but at the same time how happy she is from learning the simple things of objects, words, and language.  I’m about 50 pages in and I really like it so far.

A Tale Dark and GrimmFINISHED A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz

This was a cute read.  The running commentary from the narrator about how it’s graphic and little kids shouldn’t be reading it was very entertaining.  This was different than other fairy-tale retellings I’ve read because it tried to stay true to the original Grimm stories so there were things like selfish, mean adults, kids getting decapitated, girls getting lured to the forest to get brutally murdered etc.  I felt like it was along the lines of Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling where Dumbledore comments how kids stories these days are a little too tame and there might be something for kids to learn from stories that have bad things happen.

Truth RestoredDIDN’T START Truth Restored by Gordon B. Hinkley

My library was spread all over the floor while we were putting in new book shelves and I literally couldn’t find it in my disorganized stacks.  I’ll have to read it another time when my library is more organized and I can find things again.

Daughter of FortuneREAD SUMMARY Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende

I read the plot summary on Wiki and I thought the story was ok.  I’m not a fan of really sad stories like this one.  But sometimes I will read them if I really like the writing.  So I looked up a sample on Amazon and the writing just didn’t pull me in.

Cheaper by the DozenFINISHED Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank B. Gilbreth Jr

This was a fun, quirky book with tons of personality.  I loved reading about their lifestyle and how it worked for them to raise 12 kids.  It was full of adorable and funny stories so I was not expecting the ending to be as heart-warming as it was.  It pulled the whole book together in a way I wasn’t expecting. I loved this book (which is, by the way, nothing at all like the movie).

Starry NightsDIDN’T START Starry Nights by Daisy Whitney

My library ebook expired before I could start it :(

Smarter than you thinkDIDN’T START Smarter Than You Think: How Technology is Changing Our Minds for the Better by Clive Thompson

Since I’m not working out anymore, I don’t have as much time to listen to audibooks.  I’m still in the middle of Tolstoy and the Purple Chair so I didn’t get to start this one.  Maybe another time :)

Tolstoy and the purple chairCURRENTLY READING Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: My Year of Magical Reading by Nina Sankovitch

I really like the concept behind this book which is a woman dealing with her grief by reading a book a day for a year.  She also reviews every book she reads.  I kind of want to do something like that now but maybe just for a week or a month.  I’m almost done and as far as I can remember there wasn’t really any memorable mention of Tolstoy so the title doesn’t make sense to me.  Also the narrator is kind of annoying – she sounds just like Siri on my iPhone and I’m still questions if she is a robot or not…

InfiniteBONUS READ Infinite by Jodi Meadows

This was the most exciting book in the series.  Sam and Ana’s relationship continued to bug me, but the plot in this story got much better and I really liked the ending.

I’m glad you enjoyed Cheaper by the Dozen. That is one of my favorites! I still don’t know how they managed to raise so many children!

I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn last year and I still occasionally find myself thinking about it. It’s a great book! I hope you enjoy it!

I really like the commentary from the narrator of the A Tale Dark and Grimm, too. I think it’s the best part of the book.

I have been meaning to read Rump for awhile now. I hope you get to it, and like it.

For your Reading Queue this month I have only heard of Dark Triumph, so I will have to pay a visit to goodreads and learn more about the other books you have.
I have Jodi’s first book waiting to be read.

I had Infinite from the library but didn’t get to it. I’m planning on getting to it soon. I’m looking forward to seeing how that series will end and I’ve been expecting it to go out with a huge climatic bang. Looks like you got some decent reading done in June. I’ll be reading Dark Triumph this coming month or early August as well. I hope we both love it! :)
