Book Review: Destined by Aprilynne Pike

Destined

by Aprilynne Pike
Series: Wings #4
Published: May 1, 2012
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
Format: eBook (307 pages)
Source: Purchased

Tamani looked at her gravely, and reached up to tuck her hair behind her ear. He hesitated for an instant, then his hands found the sides of her face, pulling her to him. He didn't kiss her, just held her face close to his, their foreheads resting together, their noses almost touching. She hated how much it felt like good-bye . . .

Spoiler free even if you haven’t read the previous books in this series.

Destined was the perfect ending to one of my all-time favorite series. I liked each book in this series just as much as the first one (which is rare for me). The whole series had all the things I look for – a creative idea (that sometimes I’m kind of jealous of and wish I had thought of), a story that surprises me, but most of all something that makes me feel. I felt true love and sorrow and so many things in between while I raced through this book. The epic conclusion and the bittersweet ending were not what I was expecting. I think that all the best stories are a little bit sad.

I couldn’t stop reading this book and now all I want to do is read it again. It was full of battles, betrayal, sacrifice, high stakes, and some beautifully romantic passages that I read over and over. I’m a little speechless.

Content Rating: Medium, for some language and minor violence.

About Aprilynne Pike

Aprilynne Pike is the critically acclaimed, internationally and #1 New York Times best-selling author of the Wings series. She has been spinning stories since she was a child with a hyper-active imagination. At the age of twenty she received her BA in Creative Writing from Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho. Since then she has worked as a waitress, a restaurant manager, a slush-pile reader, an editor, a childbirth educator, and a doula.

When not writing, Aprilynne can usually be found out running; she also enjoys singing, acting, and (of course!) reading books about magic and kissing. Aprilynne lives in Arizona with her husband and four kids; she is enjoying the sunshine.

As much as I love to squee when things turn out all okay, I agree with you that a lot of the best endings are bittersweet. I’m glad you enjoyed this series so much. I hope you find another one you like just as much in the future :).
