Hi everyone! I’m really excited for next year’s Dusty Bookshelf Challenge. I started this challenge to read those books that have been sitting on my shelf for a long time or books that I don’t own, but that I’ve been meaning to read for years. It’s up to you what books qualify for this challenge.
Because of the awesome people in the Dusty Bookshelf Goodreads group, I have even more fun things to add to the challenge this year. There will be a theme for every month to help you pick books from your list. Last year we had themes like Page to Screen, Animals, Young Adult, and Jane Austen. Since these themes were so much fun in the Goodreads group, I’m going to share the theme on my blog monthly as well. The Goodreads group also has a challenge widget to keep track of your progress!
I’m also going to do mini-challenges every month. Here’s the schedule of the mini-challenges next year:
- Jan. – Quote Game
- Feb. – Share your favorite cover
- Mar. – Swag Swap
- April – Pick my Read
- May – Soundtrack your Book
- June – Read your Biggest Book
- July – eBooks
- Aug. – Clear your Shelves
- Sept. – Read your Dustiest Book
- Oct.- Book Buying Ban Moral Support
- Nov. – Share your Fav. Holiday Books
- Dec. – Final Giveaway and Link-up
There will also be a few giveaways throughout the year! The giveaways will be mostly for the review link-ups every three months. The review link-ups are for you to link up the book reviews of books that you’ve read for the challenge. The first review link-up will be in March.
You can participate in as many or as few themes and mini-challenges as you’d like. They aren’t required – they’re just for fun and motivation.
How to Sign-up
1. Sign-up with a blog post, by joining the Goodreads group, or leaving a comment on this post. Be sure to link your blog post in the linky below. Include in your blog post the badge and your list of books you want to read.
2. Pick a level:
~Pixie Dust – Read 0-5 books

~Grungy – Read 20+ books
EXTRA CREDIT-Say how long that book has been sitting on your shelf!
Thanks so much for signing up!

I haven’t completed a challenge I’ve signed up for yet, but this one sounds fun and it sounds like something I could do because it would get me to read books I already have on my TBR, lol. I think I’ll sign up, but I’m going to be a wimp and just choose pixie, lol.

I fail at my own challenge every year so I might pick 5 for next year too! :)

Looks fun! I only signed up for two challenges last year and I’ve yet to do them. :( I’m thinking I just not be the challenge type.

Being competitive is overrated. I wish I wasn’t so competitive sometimes. oh well :)
Suey says
I’m always trying to do this anyway, so I’ll join in! A blog post will come… sometime. I’ll link up when it happens! :)
Jessica B says
Yay! I always try to do it every year, but making it into a challenge has helped me make a lot of progress. Glad to have you!
Becky@Bookish Sisters says
This seems like a doable challenge. I will take that challenge!
Jessica B says
Thanks for joining! I’m going to check out your post right now.

I joined the Goodreads group, I find it easier to keep track of my challenges on there, I’m looking forward to it as I have over 100 books on my shelf I haven’t read, I’m ashamed :(
Jessica B says
Yay I’m glad you joined the group! Wow 100 is a lot, but I know that there are some people in the Goodreads group that have more than that. Like 1000 more :) Good luck with your challenge!

I really need this challenge! There are SO many books that I have and need to read – especially since so many are being made into movies next year, lol! Thanks for hosting :)
Jessica B says
I know! I can’t wait for all the good movies coming out next year. City of Bones looks amazing! Thanks for joining my challenge :)

Hooray! I’m glad you’re doing this again. I didn’t hit a lot of my dusty books last year, hopefully next year is easier – and hey, I can just move my list over to 2013!
Jessica B says
I move my list over every year LOL. Thanks for joining again!
Sarah @ Flood of Books, etc says
Thank you for hosting this challenge! I am going to try to read at least 5 this year.
Jessica B says
I’m going to try and read 5 this year too. Good luck!

I missed my goal of 10 by one book. Actually I am reading it right now. But I don’t think I will make it by the end of the month. I love this challenge and I plan on reading mostly the bookshelf books in 2013. I am going to aim for 10-15 this time. Fingers Crossed! Last year I linked up all my reviews on Goodreads. Is that the plan for this year? Thanks so much for hosting!
Jessica B says
I’m going to try and be better about having quarterly links for everyone’s reviews on my blog. But the Goodreads group will still be there to link your reviews. I say whatever is easiest for you :) Thank you so much for joining again this year!

Thanks for hosting this challenge! I have a ton of books that have been sitting on my bookshelf for years, so this will be good motivation for me to actually read some of them. I’m looking forward to participating.
Jessica B says
Glad to have you Kristina!
melissa @ 11br says
I’m trying again and hoping I don’t fail quite as epically as last year :)
Jessica B says
LOL you are too cute Melissa :) Epic fail is fun sometimes. Hope you read some this year too!

Hi! This is great flexibility from the ‘off the shelf’ / ‘to be read’ themes. It’s advantageous to include new / wished items with the dusties. I’m in so many groups, it’s important to stick to what I want to read without too many hoops. Is going with the monthly themes necessary or if we hit our levels, are we in the competition either way? :)
{Answering at my blog / e-mail is appreciated so I see it. I’m on dial-up and wasted time coming back to sites, to look for replies.}

I’m so excited to join in on the fun! Recently inspired by my big sis Margie of Bumbles and Fairytales I have started my own book blog (separated from my regular one) and this is going to be my first 2013 challenge! I’m going strong for this one and starting at the Cobweb level of reading 10-15 books off my dusty bookshelf :)
Jessica B says
Thanks so much for joining! Good luck with your new book blog! Can’t wait to read your reviews :)
